Camuy... Cuidad Romántica

Camuy (kahm-WEE) was founded in the year 1807 by Petrolina Matos. It was officially separated from Quebradillas in 1894. Three legends support the origin of the name: the first says that there was a Taino chief by the name of "Yumac" but with the passing of time the name was spelled backwards calling the region "Camuy"; the second refers to the Taino word "canuy," which means beautiful scenery, and later changed to "Camuy"; the last relates to the Coat of Arms of Camuy, which states that the Taino word means "sun".  In its beginnings Camuy was integrated into the Party of San Antonio de la Tuna. The "parties" were great extensions of land that divided Puerto Rico. This region today is known as Isabela. At the time the party covered the area between Aguadilla and Arecibo, what is known today as the municipalities of Camuy, Hatillo, Quebradillas, Isabela, Utuado, and San Sebastián.  Located on the northern coast, it is bordered by: the Atlantic Ocean on the north, Lares on the south, San Sebastián and Quebradillas on the west, and Hatillo on the east.

Camuy... Cuidad Romántica

Camuy se fundó en el año 1807 por Petrolina Matos. Se deslindó oficialmente de Quebradillas en el 1894. En cuanto al origen del nombre, existen tres teorías. La primera dice que en esta región existía un cacique de una tribu llamado Yumac. Con el transcurrir del tiempo se cambio el nombre por Camuy.  La segunda teoría se refiere al vocablo indígena "canuy" que quería decir: pasaje lindo. Mas tarde se cambio por Camuy. La otra teoría es con relación a la definición heráldica del Escudo de Armas de Camuy, que dice que Camuy es un vocablo indígena que significa sol. En sus comienzos, el hato de Camuy estaba integrado al partido de San Antonio de la Tuna. Los partidos eran regiones bien grandes en las cuales se dividía Puerto Rico. Esta región hoy se conoce hoy como Isabela. Para aquel entonces, este partido comprendía los terrenos que van desde Aguadilla hasta Arecibo, es decir, el territorio que hoy comprende los pueblos de Camuy, Hatillo, Quebradilla, Isabela, Utuado y San Sebastián.  Camuy esta localizado en la costa norte. Limita al norte con el Océano Atlántico, al sur con Lares, al oeste con San Sebastián y Quebradillas y al este con Hatillo.
